BeBeyond.com还将结合已在美多
年的中国人的经验,讨论怎样更好地适应在美国的生活。

  今天我们将为您刊登有关如何准备出国行李的内容——

  Dear friends:

Even though BCP2001 has offered you additional 5 kg luggage
waiver IF you fly with Northwest Airlines, I am afraid it still
doesn't satisfy the needs for some of you. Some BBS messages
suggest you a long long list of what to bring to the US: from
knife to rice cooker, from underwear to suits, from papernotes
to walkman. It seems that you have to move your whole house from
China to the US!

However, you really can't and needn't bring everything to
the US. Your life will be totally different from the one in
China. Something you can't live without in China could be rather
useless in the US. Take Chinese music CDs for example, you will
probably have no time for them at all for the first year. If
needed, download them through the fantastically fast campus
Internet.

For the stuff you will really need in the US, let's divide
them into three catagories:

  (1) You can easily get for free or for a very low price

Stationery like paper, note books, ballpens are offered for
free in library, professors' offices. Plea market and university
mailing list and auction website are heavens for second-handed
stuff, like mattress, bed, books, electronics. Not only the
price is attractive, the quality could be much better than
those in China.

  (2) Smart buyers can get at a cheap price

Big sales are always available in discount chains (like
Wal-mart) and supermarkets. Then smart buyers can always have
good bargains for quality products.

Take clothes for example, fashion stores, like GAP,
BananaRepublic's discount prices are not so higher than those in
China. However, the style will make you look more fashionable
and help you performance better in social life and intern
interview. Bring some casual clothes with you and buy new ones
in the US if you need more. As for high-tech-needed clothes, buy
in the US! Leave your suits and sweaters at home, you won't need
them.

  (3) Bargains unavailabe in the US

Small gifts are important in American social life. Your
professors and future pals will happily accept your typical
Chinese-style handicrafts to decorate their display shelves. You
know where to find cheap small handicrafts in China right?

Books are incredibly expensive in the US. The price in the
US is 9 times more expensive than that in China. For tool books
(like dictionary) and important text books, buy them in China if
you can find. Nowadays Tsinghua Publisher House issue some
copybooks.

All in all, don't let (1) occupy your suitcases. Leave some
space for (2) and put (3) as priority. Now don't you think you
have saved a lot of shopping time?
